Hipsters are everywhere! Even if you do not think you know what a hipster is, you have probably already met a few of them. Hipsters are those people you meet who wear flannel, have beards, and swear that they liked a band “before it was cool.” Whether you love them or hate them, you cannot deny that hipsters are a compelling choice for a themed party.
Without further ado, here is how you go about partying like a hipster:
Inspiration for a Hipster Party
Food and Beverages:
Hipsters used to be an almost entirely vegetarian subset of the population. Recently, however, meat has made a comeback (provided that it is local, grass-fed, or organic). If you are into meat at this price point, feel free to go hog wild. If not, focus on regular dishes that you can make upscale in some way – think macaroni and cheese with gourmet smoked Gouda.
If you have no desire to cook at all, make it a potluck. Hipsters love potlucks.
Beverages for your hipster party are significantly easier to manage. Hipsters only drink beer. Better still, hipsters only drink one type of beer. That beer type? Pabst Blue Ribbon – a.k.a. PBR. Stock up the fridge with tall boy cans and you will have one happy horde of hipsters hanging out in your living room until the wee hours of the morning.
Hipsterism is a cultural phenomenon born out of a taste in music that nobody else likes. Subsequently, you should plan to play only the most obscure tunes at your upcoming hipster shindig. Generally speaking, hipsters like their music to be as angst-ridden as possible, so feel free to put on some seriously sad music.
If you are worried about the authenticity of your music selections, ask one of your hipster friends to provide the playlist. Or you can plug “hipster music” into any search engine and see what comes up.
Even if you have the right food and the appropriately angst-filled music, no one will be able to recognize that you are throwing a hipster party unless you are, in fact, dressed like a hipster. The good news is that it is not all that difficult to perfect the look. First, hipsters like plaid flannel, so dig that shirt out of the back of your closet. Pair it with some acid washed jeans and a Grandpa-style cardigan sweater. Top the look off with a pair of oversized glasses.
If you have the time and genetic capability, you should also grow a beard. All hipster dudes worth their salt have beards. Or get a costume beard or mustache
In the grand scheme, throwing a hipster party is an easy way to get all your friends over for a fun night. Paying attention to special details like the quality of the (local, free range, and organic) food, free-flowing PBR, and swanky costumes just assures that all of you guests will have a fabulous time partying like their hipster brethren.
